Frequently asked questions

Where is my data stored?

On your device. PurposeNotes has no accounts and no servers of its own. If you enable sync, encrypted copies also live in your personal iCloud private database. See the privacy policy.

I forgot my passphrase. Can you reset it?

If any of your devices is signed in to your Apple ID and unlocked, open PurposeNotes there and set a new passphrase in Settings — recovery works through your Apple ID and iCloud Keychain. We hold no copy of your keys, so if you lose the passphrase and access to every signed-in device / your Apple ID, the vault cannot be recovered — by design.

How do I sync across devices?

Sign in to the same iCloud account on each device and enable sync in Settings. Sync payloads are end-to-end encrypted before they leave the device.

How do I import from Apple Notes or Obsidian?

Use the importer in the app. Notes, folder structure, ordering, formatting, and media are brought in from the source app.

How do I export or back up my notes?

Settings → Export & backup → "Export everything as Markdown" writes a plaintext Markdown archive of your vault. Keep exports somewhere safe — they are not encrypted.

A supertag / popover / graph isn't behaving. What should I try?

  1. Update to the latest version of the app.
  2. Relaunch the app.
  3. Still stuck? Email us the steps to reproduce (see above).

How do I request a feature?

Email us. Feature requests are read; requests that fit the product's meaning-first principles are prioritized.
